Agios Nikolaos City (Hotel)

Agios Nikolaos is situated approx. 64km from Heraklion airport and overlooks Crete’s largest natural bay, namely Mirambello Bay. Agios Nikolaos is most well known for its – allegedly –  bottomless lake ‘Voulismeni’ which is one of the three parts of Ag Nik (as many call it) that face the sea. The other two are Kitroplatia beach and the Marina. Sadly, Cousteau debunked the bottomless lake myth in 1976, much to the dismay of locals. Each year, the local Municipality organises cliff diving events at the lake where many Olympic medalists visit to teach young children and to perform for the gathering crowds.

The town provides a perfect balance between an ‘easy going’ ambience and the hubbub of a busy town. There are many places to eat and drink, whether you are in search of something more traditional or a luxurious outing. Some of the most picturesque and, as a result busiest places, are those surrounding the lake, especially when higher up for you to enjoy the magnificent view below. There are also a wide variety of shops for locals as well as those for visitors in search of souvenirs to take home and the town’s backstreets hold hidden beautiful neoclassical buildings to discover. For those interested in the historical aspects, there is an archaeological museum with rare findings but keep in mind it is not yet fully renovated so not all areas are accessible for the public.

For those in search of a beach to spend their days, apart from Kitroplatia, there are also others close by or on the way to Elounda. Some of these are Ammos, Ammoudi, Almyros and Havania.

In general, Agios Nikolaos is a great base from which to explore surrounding smaller villages such as Kritsa which has a plant and herb museum, Katharo Plateau, Latsida and Plaka.
