Elounda actually comprises of 7 villages, with the most well known one being Schisma (usually known as Elounda or Elounda centre). It is on the northern coast of Crete and began as a picturesque fishing village of Mirambello Bay. One of the reasons it became so famous, was that it was the filming location for BBC’s ‘Who pays the ferryman’, back in the 70’s. Nowadays, despite being surrounded by some of Crete’s most luxurious resorts which welcome Prime Ministers and Saudi Royal families, Elounda still retains its authentic charm.
It is also a springboard for those wishing to visit Spinalonga island. Small boats depart from the both arty and traditional in style, Plaka village and take you to the former leper colony which was made famous by Victoria Hislop’s novel ‘The island’. The island’s fortress was first built by the Venetians and following the Turkish occupation, it was used until the late 1950’s to quarantine those suffering from leprosy.
Another part of Elounda to visit, especially for its picturesque surrounding coastline and beaches, is Kolokytha island. Kolokytha means ‘pumpkin’ and it is said the name was given due to the islet’s shape. Kolokytha is joined to the mainland through a thin strip of land and during one’s visit, old salt panes, windmills and churches can be seen, decorating the your drive there.
Even though Spinalonga can only be reached by boat, Plaka, Kolokytha and Agios Nikolaos are beautiful areas that Apex rent a Car can ensure you get to see, in comfort and at your own convenience.
