Chania airport is named Daskalogiannis, after a Cretan rebel who fought against the Ottoman rule in the 18th century. The airport is located near Souda Bay, on the Akrotiri peninsula where there is plenty to explore.
Whether familiar with Greek Orthodox churches or not, Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) Monastery is an intriguing place to visit. The architecture and the monastery’s grounds are well preserved, with the building complex offering a beautiful palette of colours for instagram-worthy photos. There is a very small entrance fee and you can sample olives, wine and raki on the monastery’s grounds or simply stroll through its tranquil alleyways until you find the gift shop to purchase some small souvenirs.
Another historical site visited by many in the airport’s vicinity, is the Souda Bay War Cemetery, where more than 1,500 Commonwealth servicemen of WWII are buried or commemorated. The eerily simple but beautiful rows of white tombstones stand proudly across the green lawn, decorated by the flowers and with a beautiful backdrop of the sea. Visitors have described it as immaculate, humbling and moving, regardless of their nationality.
There are various beaches in the Akrotiri area such as Stavros (where Zorbas the Greek was filmed), Marathi and Kalathas but the most famous of them all would be Seitan Limania. It is small and fairly secluded beach but as it has become more well known over the years, it would be best to avoid visiting on weekends during the summer! Ensure that you can walk the path (approx. 10mins) and take any supplies you need with you such as water, umbrellas and food… once there, enjoy the company of goats and the crystal blue water of the inlet.
Most places are challenging to reach by public transport or through organised tours so the best and easiest way to travel there independently and hassle-free is by car. Our team would be happy to accommodate you, whether you have just arrived at the airport or whether you are traveling there from afar.
