Chania city (aka Hania) is situated approx. 140km from Heraklion and is the 2nd largest city on the island and also home to an airport. Once upon a time, Heraklion and Chania were at loggerheads for the title of island’s capital city and since then, there has always been a competitive spirit between the two.

The city is split by ruined Venetian walls, into the old town and the more modern urban part. As a result of the newer part and the city’s universities, the bustling city vibe is not lost after summer visitors have gone home. While there are many shops in the newer part, the old town of Chania is by far the prettiest and best to visit. A web of narrow streets and alleyways leads to the old Venetian harbour and lighthouse. Within the matrix of streets, one can find beautifully restored boutique hotels and quaint shops with merchandise for any taste and budget. The restaurants and bars offer drinks and food from as varied a background as the city’s history and culture: Italian, Turkish, Greek and more.

The city is home to the impressive Maritime Museum, an archeological museum and – for the football lovers – the Greek National Football museum. Another landmark worth visiting, is the local market situated at the heart of the city. It is a building in the shape of a cross and although many products there have been adapted to suit visitors, traditional local produce can still be found – smell the herbs, see the home made sausages and try the local cheese!
