Heraklion city (aka Iraklio) is the largest city on the island with a population of over 140.000 and located on the North coast, approx. in the middle of Crete. As a result, it is also home to the main airport of the island, named after the renowned author Nikos Kazantzakis, who was born in Heraklion.
The airport first opened in March 1939 but didn’t have commercial flights landing until 1948 and in 1971 when the first terminal was built, the first charter flight from abroad came through British Airways. Nowadays, approx. 8 million passengers come through the airport annually from across the world, making it the second busiest airport in Greece after Athens.
Despite the busyness of the airport in summer months, it is not a large building and all facilities can be found within comfortable walking distance, from taxis and rental cars to currency exchange and food/drink. Even though the airport is based in Nea Alikarnassos municipality, it is only a very short bus ride into Heraklion city centre and the bus stop is found just outside the airport grounds. If driving, the exit to the main highway is located approx. 500m from the airport and will take you in either direction on the island – East or West.
