Approx. 20km West of Heraklion city, lies the village of Fodele, most popular among locals for its tasty, divinely scented oranges. Driving by on the main road, one possibly only sees a long sandy beach, a couple of large hotels and people selling oranges by the roadside. However, there is much more to Fodele than meets the eye in this first encounter.
Fodele village is small and traditional but also very picturesque as situated next to a little stream, in a setting of abundant greenery and with a steady population of ducks and geese inhabitants throughout the year. It offers a tranquil and cool place to rest during the summer heat and all little taverns and traditional cafés offer a relaxing experience with tasty local mezes (tapas) to choose from.
Furthermore, it is the birthplace of El Greco (Dominikos Theotokopoulos) and there is a small museum in the village where visitors can see and learn more about the famous artist. Be sure to also visit the village square where there is a thousand year old plane tree bearing over a monument to El Greco. Near the museum there is also a 14th century Byzantine church with exquisite murals, which is said to have inspired the religious aspects of the painter’s later work.
Experienced hikers may wish to explore the Bobias Range (approx. 425m above sea level) and witness the five Turkish defence towers situated there – a testament to the importance of the area during the Turkish occupation.
Before leaving the village, be sure to visit the small shops selling pottery and linen, while witnessing the women weaving or sitting outdoors chatting to passers-by.
