The city of Agios Nikolaos is located in the Lassithi Prefecture, approx. 62km east of Heraklion city/airport and lies within the enchanting Mirabello gulf. Apart from its picturesque lake and proximity to Elounda, the city’s popularity has also increased due to its port.
The port of Agios Nikolaos dates back to ancient times where it served as a port to the city-state of Lato. When Venetians took over the area, it was renamed as Saint Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos). The port is located centrally to the city and can be split into three distinct parts: the area where all sailing boats and yachts come in (known as the Marina), the ferry boat section and the smaller area for fishing boats, which is an inland extension of the aforementioned part and essentially forms the lake surrounded by high overbearing cliffs.
The port offers some great boat rides such as the glass bottom boat trip and sailing trips to otherwise unattainable secret coves for a swim and dive. Most visitors of the city will not miss this opportunity to catch a boat tour to the nearby island of Spinalonga which was the notorious leper colony in the 18th and 19th centuries, made famous by Victoria Hislop’s book ‘the island’.
In addition, regular ferries from/to Piraeus (via Sitia or Heraklion) can be found at Agios Nikolaos port. Transfer by ferry between Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia is also possible and this provides the opportunity to take a vehicle on board with you too. Some of the ferry boats will also stop at various other islands on their journey north to the mainland, such as Milos, Santorini, Anafi, Rhodes and Karpathos.
The Agios Nikolaos port area often hosts international sporting events and exhibitions such as Sailing competitions and Cliff Diving demonstrations, with participating athletes from across the globe.
Whatever your reason for visiting the area, it is at least worth a day’s stop to wander around the city, enjoy a coffee by the lake and perhaps take one of the many intriguing boat trips. While there are buses from all major towns and cities, taking you into Agios Nikolaos and close to the port area, it is always easier and most advisable to have your own car – this is why Apex Car Rentals is here for you and your holidays.
