Rethymno city is located approx. 60km from Chania and 78km from Heraklion, both of which have airports. It is situated at the base of the Psiloritis mountain range (peak of Mount Ida at 2,456m altitude) and at the narrowest part of the island, which makes for only a 45min drive to reach Plakias on the South coast.

Rethymno old town has been likened to a miniature Chania, with a beautiful Venetian heritage: the Fortezza (uphill), the picturesque harbour with the lighthouse and the Rimondi fountain hidden among shops. In addition, obvious Turkish-era mosques such as the Nerantze decorate the town and Byzantine buildings can be found everywhere, proof of the city’s multi-cultural past. One of the best things to do here is to wander the little maze of streets with colourful buildings and fuchsia Bougainvilleas and discover amazing little taverns and bars, usually populated by locals and the vast amount of students the city welcomes each year. Try the Greek coffee and traditional ‘loukoumades’ (mini donuts) in places such as Meli Melo and Arokaria.

For the history lovers, there is an archaeological museum and a historical one with folk art. If you have a car from Apex, it is also easy to reach Arkadi Monastery which is renown for its tragic history and significance in the battle of Crete against the Turks. UNESCO has declared the baroque church and the surrounding monastery grounds as a European Monument of Freedom.

Rethymno is also well known for its 12km long sandy beach that begins in the city and ends at Skaleta. Part of the beach is a protected area for the Caretta Caretta (loggerhead) sea turtle nests. For those who visit in the winter months, Rethymno is most famous for its magnificent carnival and the ‘Lost Treasure’ hunt organised each year with a huge amount of teams participating.
